Testing for Spiritual Intelligence

Theory

Now that I've said you can't take a test for Spiritual Intelligence, The 31 day outline suggests we can get some indication. Spiritual intelligence is the ability to discern if you are in or out of God's presence. I can't tell how God's presence feels in your heart, but I know what the side effects are.

Julian of Norwich lived in interesting times; the Bubonic plague killed 25 million people in Europe. The Church hierarchy was in disarray, and war was everywhere.. Yet Julian never mentioned any of this.. She managed to see past the external events and saw how God turned every disaster and every sin into blessing. Julian's only comment was 'All shall be well' Job had the same attitude. Job's response to disaster and suffering was 'Though he slay me, yet will I trust Him'.

The point is this. God's Peace that passeth all understanding in your heart overwhelms all the fear, uncertainty, anxiety, and doubt that the world continually offers you. If you are seeing through God's eyes, through the eyes of Love, If you are trusting that God works everything for good to those that love Him, you will see past the fear... So if your response is 'Of course I trust God', but you continually fret and try to work your way out of difficult situations (that God has placed you in for your education btw), then you are not really trusting God.. You are trusting yourself. If you are praying that God will solve your [insert your problem here] because you love him, You've still got your eyes on the problem. Not on the Lord.

Here's David's response to hiding in the hills - with the king's army searching for him to kill him.. 'One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. ' Without the presence of God.. this is impossible..

You might enjoy this. Brother Lawrence worked in the kitchen of a monastery.
Brother Lawrence:
didn't get prophetic messages
didn't hear voices
didn't perform miracles
didn't have followers
didn't start a movement
didn't found an order
didn't start a church
didn't lead a cult or sect
didn't become an expert or a guru
didn't crusade
didn't evangelize
didn't proselytize
didn't have ribbons, medals, or awards
didn't write a book
didn't have wealth, power, or status
Brother Lawrence simply loved God.

Practice

The apophatic test. What Love is not.
Tell the mind in your heart (your conscience) to pay attention to your words and actions throughout the day and let you know every time you are acting contrary to God's Love.. Watch for words or behavior that are impatient, unkind, selfish, prideful, crude, disreputable, fearful, anxious, or distrustful.. If you catch yourself offending someone, ask their forgiveness. If your style allows it (mine doesn't), take an inventory in the evening and keep a journal of your results. Whatever your style, ask the Lord for His forgiveness and His mercy and His strength.

More Practice

Disengage your rational mind. Get into the mind of your heart. Locate His presence. Rest in His Love. Stay there. If any thoughts distract you, look over their shoulder and relocate His presence. Practice the presence is just what it says.. Underline the word practice. Open your heart to Him. Practice when you wake up in the morning. Practice as you go through the day. Practice when you go to sleep in the evening. It takes practice because His Love, Joy, and Peace work their way into your heart gradually. This is a relationship. If you want a relationship to work, you have to spend time together. You have to communicate.

Foundations

Ephesians 1:16-18 I cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints..

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

1 Corinthians 13:1-8 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth...

Psalm 27:4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.
